Description: In a small town near St. Vith in the Ardennes we discovered a small museum handling the Battle of the Bulge: Ardennen Poteau Museum '44.
It's housed in a former Customs Office, which was by turns in German and Belgian hands in the last centuries.
The museum isn't a particularly large one, but what is on display is wonderful. The dioramas are life-like and most of the vehicles (jeeps, motors, half-tracks, cannons and tanks) are still in driving condition. Using the guide that can be borrowed at the entrance you get a detailed description of the strategies of both Germans and Allied Parties. The owners of the museum can also tell you a lot of interesting stuff that isn't in the guide though. Next to this it is possible to get a tour through the battlefield in an American or German half-track vehicle.
German Sd.Kfz. 251. It is possible to tour the battlefield with this half-track. |
Inside the poorly equiped Sd.Kfz. 251. It must have been hell sitting in this vehicle during battle. |
M4 Sherman Tank equiped with 105 mm Howitzer undergoing maintenance. |
Part of American M5 13-ton High-Speed Tractor with M2A1 105mm Howitzer. |
M29 fast track vehicle. Its nickname was Weasel. An American mortar stands in the front. |
WLA motorbike built by Harley Davidson. The motordriver is armed with a Thompson machinegun. |
Part of the German diorama. |
Waffen SS soldier with Panzerfaust, ready to fire. |
Recruitment poster for the Waffen SS, by the hand of Hans Schweitzer (a.k.a. Mjölnir). |
The museum's dog: A very nice mascot indeed! |
